Yushi Ishizaki

Year of birth: 1768
A painter from the late Edo period. His pen name was Shisai, and he was also known by the names Hourei and Hourei. He was born in Nagasaki as the son of Araki Motoyu, and learned painting from his father. As the grandson of his father's teacher, Ishizaki Motonori, died young and there was no successor, he was adopted and took over the Kara-e Meri-shoku style. He was an old friend of Tanomura Takeda, and Takeda's record of their friendship, "Takeda Manor Shiyu Garoku," states that he was "good at Western painting." He skillfully painted in a variety of styles, including sketching, and was also apparently good at glass painting. During the Bunka era (1804-18), he is said to have had 277 students. His representative works include "Blonhoff Family" (1817, Kobe City Museum) and "Oriental Ship" (1822, ibid.).

江戸後期の画家。字は士斎。鳳嶺,放齢とも号す。荒木元融の子として長崎に生まれ,父に画法を学ぶ。父の師である石崎元徳の孫が夭逝し後継者がなかったので,その養子となって唐絵目利職を継いだ。田能村竹田とは旧知の仲で,竹田の交遊録『竹田荘師友画録』には「西洋画を善くす」などと記されている。写生を交えて諸様式を器用に描き分け,ガラス絵も得意だったらしい。文化年間(1804～18)には門人277人を数えたという。代表作に「ブロンホフ家族図」(1817,神戸市立博物館蔵),「蘭船図」(1822,同前)など。
