Born June 25, 1900 in Windsor, Berkshire
[Died] August 27, 1979. Mullaghmore, Sligo. British naval officer. Joined the navy in 1913, and served as captain of destroyers and aircraft carriers during World War II. In May 1943, he was appointed Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces in Southeast Asia. There were accusations that he was appointed because he was a cousin of King George VI, but he led a successful operation to recapture Burma, which had been occupied by Japan. He was made a viscount in 1946 and an earl in 1947. He served as Governor-General of India from 1947 to 1948, and achieved the separation of India and Pakistan, and their transition to independence. He was chairman of the Admiralty (Chief of the Naval Staff) from 1950 to 1952, a field marshal in 1956, and Chairman of the Defence Staff from 1959 to 1965. He was assassinated in 1979 when a time bomb was planted on his yacht by the Irish Republican Army (IRA) while he was resting.
