This peace treaty ends the war of aggression against the Netherlands, known as the Dutch Wars (1672-78), waged by France's Louis XIV. Nijmegen is the name of the Dutch city where the treaty was concluded. France first made a peace treaty with the Netherlands in August 1678, abolishing the high tariffs on the Netherlands. Next, in September of the same year, France made peace with Spain, receiving indemnities and most of Franche-Comté and the Spanish Netherlands. Finally, in February 1679, a peace treaty was concluded with the German emperor, giving France Freiburg. With this series of peace treaties, Louis XIV's influence spread throughout Europe, ushering in his golden age, but France was effectively defeated in the tariff war with the Netherlands, and Colbert's mercantilist policies were thwarted.
