There are many morphological variations, and the ones with particularly large flowers are called Ooboshibana var. hortensis Makino, and are cultivated for decorative purposes and dyeing purposes. Blue paper dyed with the juice of the flowers, which contains the blue pigment commelinin, is used as a paint for the underpainting of Yuzen and tie-dyeing.
