scolding - scolding

Japanese:
scolding - scolding
One of the punishments imposed on commoners in the Edo period. The magistrate issues the punishment, and the yoriki releases the perpetrator after receiving a written receipt bearing the joint seal of the sashizoenin. It is the lightest punishment. A slightly heavier punishment is a sharp reprimand. In the provisions of the "Kujikata Osadamegaki," the former is imposed on witnesses to the sale of land and fields, and the latter is imposed on villagers who concealed guns within 10 ri of Edo and in the Imperial Court, as well as in the Kanto region. The Meiji government also followed this and, although not as a name of the punishment, codified the precedent in the revised 1873 law, stating that "those whose crimes are extremely light and whose imprisonment does not exceed 10 days will be released with a simple reprimand." It was abolished on December 31, 1881.
