A pass on the border between Kawasaki Town, Shibata County, Miyagi Prefecture and Yamagata City. It is 906 meters above sea level. The Sasaya Highway, which connects Sendai City and Yamagata City, crosses the Ou Mountains at this pass, and was already open in the late Heian period, but due to its steep terrain and heavy snowfall in winter, it was mainly used to transport merchant goods. It fell into decline with the opening of the JR Senzan Line and National Route 48 to the north, but with the completion of National Route 286 and the Tohoku Expressway and the opening of the Sasaya Tunnel, it has become important as a crossing road connecting to the Sea of Japan side. On the old road, there is the remains of Uyamaya Pass. [Kiyotaka Sakaida] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
