Politician. Born in Fukuoka Prefecture, he graduated from the First High School and the Faculty of Letters at Tokyo Imperial University. During that time, he participated in the Shinjinkai, founded the Student Union, and joined the Japanese Communist Party in 1923 (Taisho 12). He was arrested in the March 15 Incident (1928) and spent 18 years in prison without changing his views. After being released in October 1945 (Showa 20), he worked hard to rebuild the party and became a member of the Central Committee and Politburo. When the party's central committee split in 1950, he joined the international faction and was an executive member at the 7th and 8th Congresses. He was elected from Osaka in the 1946 general election, and lost his parliamentary qualifications in 1950 due to MacArthur's public office ban, but returned in the 1955 general election. He voted in favor of the Partial Nuclear Arms Ban Treaty in the 1964 Diet session and was expelled for violating party rules. In the same year, he formed the group "Voice of Japan" with Shigeo Kamiyama and others to support the Soviet Communist Party, and became its national chairman. "Voice of Japan" was renamed "Peace and Socialism" in 1977. His books include "Eighteen Years in Prison," "On the State," and "Regarding Japanese Imperialism."
