Sounkyo

Japanese:
Sounkyo

The gorge of the Ishikari River is located in Kamikawa Town under the jurisdiction of the Kamikawa Regional Subprefectural Bureau in central Hokkaido. It is located on the north side of the Daisetsu Volcano and stretches for 24 kilometers. It was created when the upper reaches of the Ishikari River eroded the welded tuff that constitutes the Daisetsu Volcano. The cliffs reach 100 meters high, and columnar joints are generally vertical. There are many oddly shaped rocks, and waterfalls can be seen flowing down the cliffs. The surrounding area is a primeval forest of a mixture of conifers and broadleaves, and is one of the most famous scenic spots in Daisetsuzan National Park. In particular, Obakokokobako in the upper reaches is a scenic spot worthy of the name Hako (a topography with steep cliffs on both sides of the riverbed) as the clear stream washes over the towering cliffs with columnar joints.

Sounkyo Onsen, located in the center of the gorge, is one of the best hot spring areas in Hokkaido, with a variety of springs including simple hot springs and sulfur springs, and is lined with high-rise hotels. It is also a base for gorge exploration and mountain climbing, and is the base for the ropeway to Mt. Kurodake. National Route 39 runs along the gorge, connecting Asahikawa City and Abashiri City. The name Sounkyo was given by Omachi Keigetsu during the Taisho era.

A gorge in the upper reaches of the Ishikari River, north of Mount Daisetsu. It stretches for 24km, and the cliffs with columnar joints such as Obako and Kobako present a strange sight. It is part of Daisetsuzan National Park. The area was originally called "So-un-bet" (river with a waterfall) in the Ainu language, but in the Taisho period, the writer Omachi Keigetsu gave it the name "Sounkyo." Japanese:
