A plain-weave cotton fabric woven thinly and finished with a texture very similar to gauze. Originally it was a thin linen fabric, but to imitate the texture, stiff cotton fabrics with a rough feel began to be woven, and cotton fabrics have since become more common. Cotton cheesecloth is made from single yarns of about 40 count, and a strong paste is applied to the warp threads when they are woven, and then the fabric is bleached and finished with an even stronger paste. It is also available in plain colors and with a printed finish. High-quality cheesecloth is widely used for handkerchiefs, as well as curtain fabrics, artificial flowers, and doll costumes.
