A hanging scroll painting with a Chinese poem related to the subject written in the blank space at the top of the picture. It was common for literati in the Song and Yuan dynasties of China to write a poem at the top of the painting, and this custom eventually became widespread among Zen monks. In Japan, the style of painting and poetry scrolls also came into use with the introduction of Zen Buddhism, and as Chinese literature became more popular among the Zen monks of the Five Mountains, the style of painting and poetry scrolls became even more widespread and played an important role in the establishment of ink-wash landscape paintings. Representative examples include the unknown artist "Shibamon Shingetsuzu" (1405, Fujita Museum of Art) and "Kei-in Shochikuzu" (13), attributed to Meicho.
