…In 1806, Sato retired from diplomatic life after his last term as Japanese envoy to China. After returning to Japan, he lived in Ottery St. Mary, a small village in Devonshire, and died in 1829 at the age of 86. Sato, a scholar and diplomat, wrote many books, including The Jesuit Mission Press in Japan, 1591-1610 (1888) on Japanese studies and Sato's Guide to Diplomatic Practice (1979), first published in 1917 and now in its fifth revised edition, on diplomatic history.
