Shigasato ruins
Located in Mise 1-chome and 2-chome, Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture, this is one of the largest archaeological sites from the late Jomon period in the Kinki region. It is located on the west shore of Lake Biwa, at the end of a complex alluvial fan formed at the southeastern foot of Mt. Hiei, at an altitude of 95m, and 10m above the water surface of Lake Biwa. Excavations by Kyoto University in 1948 unearthed Shiga-Sato-style pottery consisting of a basic combination of a dark brown shallow bowl with arc-shaped patterns made by sculpting or half-cut bamboo pipes, and a deep bowl with almost no pattern. This was accompanied by pottery from the O-Hora B and BC styles (O-Hora shell mound) from the late Tohoku region and early late Hokuriku region, and the shallow bowls showed influences from the black polished shallow bowls of the Kyushu region, making it a reference material for the early late Kinki region.
