Yoshisuke Kusaka

...A patriot of the Choshu Domain during the late Edo period. His given name was Michitake and he was called Yoshisuke. His pen name was Genzui. His family was a doctor for the domain. He was a disciple of Yoshida Shoin, and his talent was highly evaluated, leading to his rise to prominence. In 1862 (Bunkyu 2), when the domain's policy of uniting the Imperial Court and the Shogunate reached a dead end and shifted to a policy of revering the Emperor and expelling the barbarians, he worked the groundwork and was appointed to the position. He later played an active role in the burning of the British Embassy in Gotenyama and the bombardment of the Shimonoseki Foreign Fleet, but in 1864 (Genji 1), he participated in the Kinmon Incident, where he was wounded and committed suicide.
