...When they reached adulthood, their apprentice names were changed to tedai-names, and even if they were given a branch of the family (called a "bekke" in the Kansai region) they would use the tedai-name or a variation of it, and would become the first head of a commuting or self-run store-owning family. Their marriage was an opportunity for the new couple to be established as the master of the family and to be positioned in the merchant society, and was similar to the village, which Ariga Kizaemon called "oyakata-tori-kon," as opposed to marriages between children of the spouses whose parents were the master (bride-taking marriage, groom-taking marriage). The compadrasgo in the Latin cultural sphere and the baptismal parents in Catholicism in general are similar to this, but the boss-subordinate relationship is found in a wider variety of forms, especially in Japanese society, including those within a company and even between companies as parent-subsidiary relationships. ...
