After the second half of the 9th century, when the Frankish monarchy was divided and weakened, the independence of the various tribes in the East Frankish Kingdom strengthened. Saxony was forced to fight on its own against the pressure of the Slavs from the east and the invasion of the Normans (North Germanic people) from the north. During this time, the Liudolfing family, which had power in Ostphalia, gradually emerged as a leader and eventually succeeded in establishing the position of Archduke dux (Herzog in German) over all the tribes. Moreover, Henry I of this family succeeded Conrad I in 919, becoming the first non-Frankish person to ascend to the German throne. …

The royal family's ancestor was Liudolf (d. 866), a powerful man in eastern Saxony, and is properly called the Liudolfinger. He established his power by defending his country against the Slavs and Danes, and his son Otto (d. 912) became Grand Duke of Saxony. …
