The use of force to settle disputes between nations. The Kellogg-Briand Pact, the United Nations Charter, and the Italian Constitution all renounce war as a means of settling international disputes, but this does not include wars of self-defense. Article 9 of the Japanese Constitution permanently renounces war as a means of settling international disputes, does not recognize the state's right to wage war, and denies the possession of military forces, so it is disputed whether self-defense wars are permitted.
