[1] 近世、京都三条烏丸(からすま)東入にあった袱紗(ふくさ)屋。また、その店で製した袱紗。※浮世草子・好色二代男（1684）一「あるじ奥より甫竹がためたる一節に、塩瀬(シホセ)が不洗(ふくさ)を取添。もしかやうの物ても御座らぬか」[2] 〘名〙羽二重(はぶたえ)風の厚地の織物。細い生糸を密に配列して経(たていと)とし、太い生糸を緯(よこいと)として、平織にしたもので、多く横畝(うね)がある。織りあげた後、精練・染色などの加工をするため、博多織と異なり、しなやかである。帯地・袱紗・羽織地などに用いられる。塩瀬羽二重、紋塩瀬などがある。※油地獄（1891）〈斎藤緑雨〉二「襦袢は緋の紋壁にしほぜの白半襟(しろえり)」
