Festoon (English spelling)

Japanese: フェストゥーン（英語表記）festoon

A type of decorative pattern. A floral rope made of stylized flowers, fruits, leaves, and ribbons is left hanging in the middle and both ends are tied together. It is also called hanging flower decoration. The name comes from the decorations used for "festivals" (festa), in which floral ropes and leaves are tied together and hung from above. It is also seen in late Greek works, but was mainly used during the Roman period. It is also commonly seen in the Italian Renaissance and Baroque periods, and is often used as a border pattern for architecture, furniture, dyed and woven goods, ceramics, metalwork, etc.

装飾文様の一種。様式化された草花，果実，葉，リボンを使った花縄の中央部をたるませ，両端を縛った形式の文様。懸花装飾ともいう。「祭り」 festaのための花縄や草葉などをつないで上からつるす飾りに由来する名称。ギリシア後期の作品にもみられるが，主としてローマ時代に盛んに用いられた。イタリア・ルネサンス期やバロック期にも多くみられ，建築，家具，染織品，陶磁器，金工品などの縁どり模様として多用されている。
