Born October 4, 1861 in Rochester
Died: July 25, 1918, Rochester. American Baptist theologian. Leader of the Social Gospel movement in America. After studying in Germany, he studied at the University of Rochester and the Theological Seminary. He served as pastor of the Second Baptist Church, located near the slums of New York City, where many German immigrants and workers lived. He became interested in social salvation after experiencing the poverty of his congregants and the resulting physical and mental disabilities. He was a professor of New Testament studies at Rochester Theological Seminary (1897-1902) and a professor of church history at the same university, and preached that in order to save individuals from the evils of capitalist economy, the economic order must be reformed according to Christian principles. His main works are "Christianity and the Social Crisis" (07), "Prayers of the Social Awakening" (10), "Christianizing the Social Order" (12), and "A Theology for the Social Gospel" (17).
