Japanese: ウミネコ(海猫) - ウミネコ（英語表記）black‐tailed gull

A seabird of the Laridae family (illustration). Its total length is about 46 cm, and its wingspan is about 110 cm. It is found in the waters of Japan, Sakhalin, the Southern Kuril Islands, the Korean Peninsula, and the coasts of China. It breeds in groups on remote islands and reefs throughout Japan. Well-known breeding sites include Teuri Island in Hokkaido, Kabushima Island in Aomori Prefecture, Tsubakishima Island in Iwate Prefecture, Enoshima Island in Miyagi Prefecture, Tobishima Island in Yamagata Prefecture, and Kyoshima Island in Shimane Prefecture, and are designated as natural monuments. It is the most common species of seagull in Japan and can be seen all year round, but it is rare in the Okinawa region.

カモメ目カモメ科の海鳥（イラスト）。全長約46cm，翼の開張約110cm。日本，サハリン，南千島，朝鮮半島，中国沿岸などの海域に分布する。日本各地の離島や岩礁などに集団で繁殖している。北海道天売島，青森県蕪島，岩手県椿島，宮城県江ノ島，山形県飛島，島根県経島などが集団繁殖地としてよく知られ，天然記念物にもなっている。日本ではもっともポピュラーなカモメ類で，一年中見ることができるが，沖縄地方では少ない。
