…For the most part, they are friendly to humans, making gardens and pastures bloom, watching over livestock, providing game for hunting, granting prophetic powers to those who drink or bathe in their springs, and curing illnesses. However, they are also believed to sometimes intimidate travelers passing through the forest, possess those who see them and drive them insane, kidnap people, as in the case of Hylas, a beautiful young man from the Argo, who was lured into a spring, or take revenge on those who do not respond to their courtship, as in the case of Daphnis, a shepherd from Sicily, who was blinded. For this reason, they have been the subject of worship throughout Greece since ancient times, and offerings are often made to springs and caves. …
