Gerbertus (Latin name: Gerbertus) was a French cleric and educator who excelled in mathematics and astronomy. In 999, he was recommended by Otto III as the first French pope, and was subsequently called Silvester II. Born in Aurillac in the Auvergne, he was taken in by Borel II, Count of Barcelona, in his youth, and in this Catalan land he was exposed to and absorbed Arabic learning at an early stage. He later taught many students based on this new knowledge at the cathedral school in Reims, and gained a great reputation, becoming a teacher for the House of Saxony.

ラテン名ゲルベルトゥスGerbertus。フランスの聖職者，教育者で，数学と天文学に長ずる。999年にオットー3世の推挙でフランス人としてはじめてローマ教皇となり，以後シルウェステル2世Silvester IIと称する。オーベルニュのオーリヤックAurillacに生まれ，若き日にバルセロナ伯のボレル2世に引きとられ，このカタルニャの地でいちはやくアラビアの学問に接し，それを吸収した。のちにランスの司教座聖堂付属学校でこうした新知識に基づいて多くの弟子たちを教え，高い名声を得，ザクセン家の師傅となる。
