Around 1100-54 Italian church reformer. Born in Brescia. He is said to have studied under Abelard in Paris. He returned to Brescia in 1119 and shocked the people with his fierce attacks on simony and the secularization of the church. As dean of the cathedral chapter, he had a great influence on the citizens, but was banished by the Pope and went to Paris. There he participated in the debate between Abelard and Bernard of Clairvaux. He supported the former, but was condemned along with Abelard at the Synod of Sens (1140).
