Monteux
A French-born American conductor. He studied violin at the Paris Conservatoire in his hometown, and while still a student, he played as a violinist at the Opéra Comique and the Colonne Orchestra. He also made his debut as a conductor, and as the conductor of the Ballets Russes from 1911 to 1914, he premiered monumental works of 20th century ballet, such as Stravinsky's Petrushka and The Rite of Spring, M. Ravel's Daphnis and Chloe, and Debussy's Journeys. He subsequently served as principal conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra from 1919 to 1924, music director of the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra from 1936 to 1952, and principal conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra from 1961 to 1964. He devoted himself to developing the Orchestre Symphonique de Paris (disbanded in 1938) from 1929 to 1935. He acquired American citizenship in 1942. He combined a beautiful sense of color with a strong artistic ability, and gave outstanding performances of modern French works as well as German music. フランス出身の米国の指揮者。生地のパリ音楽院バイオリン科に学び,在学中からオペラ・コミック座とコロンヌ管弦楽団のバイオリン奏者として活動。指揮者としてもデビューし,1911年−1914年バレエ・リュッスの指揮者としてストラビンスキーの《ペトルーシカ》や《春の祭典》,M.ラベルの《ダフニスとクロエ》,ドビュッシーの《遊戯》など,20世紀バレエの記念碑的作品の初演を手がける。以後,1919年−1924年ボストン交響楽団の常任指揮者,1936年−1952年サンフランシスコ交響楽団の音楽監督,1961年−1964年ロンドン交響楽団の首席指揮者などを歴任。1929年−1935年にはパリ交響楽団(1938年解散)の育成に力を尽くした。1942年米国籍を取得。色彩的な感覚美と堅固な造形力をあわせもち,フランスの近現代作品のほかドイツ音楽にも名演を残した。1963年にロンドン交響楽団と来日。→NBC交響楽団/ベイヌム
