Ito clan

Japanese:
Ito clan

The Kamakura Gokenin (vassal of the Kamakura clan) whose main residence was in Ito-no-sho, Tagata County, Izu Province (Ito City, Shizuoka Prefecture). When Tamenori, a descendant of Takechimaro of the Nanke lineage of the Fujiwara clan, became the governor of Suruga and Izu Provinces, the family called itself the Kudo clan, and spread to various parts of Suruga, Izu, Totomi, and Sagami Provinces, but the family that was native to Ito-no-sho called itself the Ito clan. Many of the family members rushed to join Minamoto no Yoritomo, who raised an army in Izu, but Ito Sukechika attacked Yoritomo in the Battle of Ishibashiyama, and later committed suicide as Yoritomo's power expanded. The Soga brothers, famous for the Soga Monogatari, were also from this clan. As vassals of the Kamakura clan, the clan was granted territories in various provinces, and when they settled in the south, they took on the name of the Ito clan.

The Ito clan is native to Ise, Kai, Musashi, Aizu, Kii, Bitchu, Sanuki, Chikuzen, Buzen, Hizen, and Hyuga provinces, but the Ito clan, who became the lords of Obi domain in Hyuga province (Miyazaki prefecture) and Okada domain in Bitchu province (Okayama prefecture), flourished as feudal lords in the early modern period and became viscounts after the Meiji Restoration.
