A store that sells cheap sweets. Dagashi are crude sweets made with cheap ingredients. According to Zoku Asukagawa, typical sweets in Edo in the late 18th century were itaokoshi, daruma sugar, kuriyaki, cinnamon sugar, and okorobashi. The contents of each are unclear, but most of them seem to have been candy or okoshi made with brown sugar. In every town, bantaro sold these as a side job in the guardhouse, along with other miscellaneous goods such as straw sandals, tissues, moxa, and candles.
