Electrostriction

Electrostriction
The phenomenon of mechanical distortion and deformation caused by ionic polarization when an electric field is applied to a dielectric material. It is also called electrostriction. It is similar to the inverse piezoelectric effect exhibited by piezoelectric materials, but differs in that the magnitude of distortion in electrostriction is proportional to the square of the electric field, whereas in the inverse piezoelectric effect it is proportional to the electric field. However, this narrow definition of electrostriction and the inverse piezoelectric effect are sometimes collectively called electrostriction. Electrostriction is evident in ferroelectric materials, but if the remanent polarization is used as a bias electric field, it becomes exactly the same as a piezoelectric material, so it is used in electromechanical conversion. (→ Electrostrictive vibrator)
