A deciduous shrub of the Urticaceae family that is widely distributed in the subtropics of East Asia, it grows quickly and invades logged areas as a pioneer tree. It grows to a height of 2-3m and branches out well, with a shape similar to that of a young willow. The leaves are also similar to those of willows, being slender at 10-15cm long and 1-3cm wide. The undersides of the leaves are covered with white spider hairs. It is dioecious, with the female flowers clustered in a globular shape. The inflorescence of the male flowers is a well-branched cyme. The flowers bloom around April, and the fruit ripens in May and June. During the fruiting season, the fused perianth of the female flowers becomes juicy and turns yellow.
