A nunnery of the Myoshinji school of the Rinzai sect in Nara City. Its mountain name is Fumonzan. Its other name is Yamamura Palace. The principal image is Nyoirin Kannon. Umemiya, the daughter of Emperor Gomizunoo, was married to Takatsukasa Norihira at the age of 13, but was divorced three years later and returned to her father, the emperor. The unfortunate Umemiya became a nun, devoted to the famous Rinzai monk Itshimonju. She was given the Buddhist title Bunchi and the title Daitsu, and founded a hermitage called Enshoji next to Shugakuin Imperial Villa. Later, Bunchi moved the hermitage to Yashimamura in Yamato in 1656 (Meireki 2), and then to Yamamura in 1669 (Kanbun 9). Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
