Born: December 5, 1687. Baptized: Lucca Died: September 17, 1762, Dublin. Italian violinist and composer. Studied violin under Corelli and composition under A. Scarlatti, and was active as a violinist in orchestras. In 1714 he moved to London, and from 1749 to 1755 he lived in Paris, before settling in London again. As a soloist and teacher, he introduced the violin playing technique he learned from Corelli to England. He is also known as a pioneer of high position playing and double stop techniques. His main work, The Art of the Violin (1731), was a masterpiece that was translated into many languages at the time. He also composed violin sonatas and concerti grosso.
