Yi Tong Zhi (English spelling)

Japanese: 一統志 - いっとうし（英語表記）Yī tŏng zhì

The name of a traditional Chinese national geography book. Yitong refers to the unification of the world under one government, and even to the entire world. In China, geography books that recorded the customs and history of each region of the country were called by various names such as "Kyushu Zhi" and "Gunguozhi." In the Yuan dynasty, "Da Yuan Yitong Zhi" was created, and after that, "Da Ming Yitong Zhi" and "Da Qing Yitong Zhi" were created in the Ming and Qing dynasties, respectively, and the term "Yitong Zhi" came to refer to an official national geography book. According to the preface to "Da Yuan Yitong Zhi," the name "Yitong Zhi" was chosen with pride in the fact that, unlike previous dynasties, they had completed a truly unified nation that stretched from East Asia to Central Asia and North Asia (Kui Tang Xiao Manuscripts).

中国の伝統的な全国地理書の名。一統とは天下が一つの政権のもとに統一されること，さらにその天下全体のこと。中国では古い時代から全国各地の風俗，沿革などを記した地理書を《九州志》《郡国志》などのさまざまな名称で呼んできたが，元代に《大元一統志》がつくられ，以後明･清代におのおの《大明一統志》《大清一統志》がつくられ，一統志といえば官製の全国地誌を指すようになった。《大元一統志》の序文によれば，それまでの王朝とは異なり，もとは東アジアより中央アジア，北アジアにかけて，本当の意味での統一国家を完成させたという自負をこめて《一統志》と名づけたという(《圭塘小稿》)。
