French actor and director. Along with Antoine and Lune Peau, he is one of the three great figures in the history of modern French theater before World War I. Born in Aubervilliers, he aspired to be an actor from an early age. Introduced by Antoine in 1887, he played a minor role at the Théâtre Libre, but officially joined in 1892, and in 1896 he performed Jarry's "King Ubu" at the Théâtre d'États-États-États, achieving fame. Influenced by Romain Rolland, he dreamed of expanding theater to the wider public and creating a people's festival, realizing a mobile theater and also innovating in directing. He was the first director of TNP (National Popular Theater) from 1920 to 1933, and at the same time served as artistic director of the Odeon Theater from 1921 to 1930, and also established the World Theater Association, carrying out his theatrical activities with a broad perspective.
