Citral - Citral (English spelling)

A linear monoterpene aldehyde. It is the main component of lemongrass oil, an essential oil obtained by steam distillation of the leaves of lemongrass, a grass plant. It is a pale yellow liquid with a lemon-like fragrance. Naturally occurring citral is a mixture of 80% trans-geranial (α-citral) and 20% cis-neral (β-citral). Industrially, it is produced by the catalytic air oxidation of geraniol. It is used as a food flavoring, soap flavoring, and cologne flavoring, but is also important as a raw material for the synthesis of ionone, vitamin A, and vitamin E.

鎖状モノテルペンアルデヒドの一つ。イネ科の植物レモングラスの葉を水蒸気蒸留して得られる精油であるレモングラス油の主成分。レモン様芳香を有する淡黄色の液体。天然産シトラールはトランス形のゲラニアール（α-シトラール）80％、シス形のネラール（β-シトラール）20％の混合物である。工業的にはゲラニオールの接触空気酸化によって製造される。食品香料、せっけん香料、コロン用香料として用いられるが、ヨノン、ビタミンAおよびビタミンEの合成原料としても重要である。
