...Geta is a new word found in documents from the Edo period, written as 下踏 or げた, but since bridge beams, yugeta (a seating platform) and other flat boards with two legs attached have long been called keta or geta, in the early modern period, ashida and bokuri came to be called geta as well. In eastern Japan, high geta are called ashida, in the Amami and Okinawa regions geta are called ashijita or ashijiya, and in the Izu Islands and western Japan geta are called bokuri or bukuri, which are remnants of these names.
