A powerful clan that lived in the Tsugaru region of Mutsu Province, the northernmost part of the Tohoku region. Lord of Hirosaki Domain. The first Tsugaru lord, Tamenobu, is famous as a strategist among the Sengoku daimyo, but as an illegitimate son of Konoe Hisamichi, he initially took the surname Oura, and later unified Tsugaru and became the ancestor of the Tsugaru clan. One theory is that he was the son of Takeda Kiinokami Morinobu, lord of Horikoshi Castle. In 1590 (Tensho 18), Toyotomi Hideyoshi granted him 45,000 koku of land after he participated in the Odawara Campaign, and after the Battle of Sekigahara, he became an outside daimyo with a stipend of 47,000 koku and made Hirosaki Castle his residence. In 1808 (Bunka 5), the clan was awarded an additional 100,000 koku as a reward for its contributions to the defense of northern Ezo, and for about 300 years, until the 12th head of the clan, Tsuguakira, they prospered as the leader of Mutsu Province.
