Carbonia - Carbonia

...Many of those who were engaged in livestock farming have migrated to Tuscany and other parts of the peninsula where the land conditions are better, and are now engaged in sheep farming. Mining of lead, zinc, coal, etc. in the Iglesiente mountains has played an important role in the Sardinian economy since the mid-19th century, and there have been some temporary booms, such as the coal town of Carbonia, founded in 1938, but today there is only the mining of building materials and salt production near Cagliari. Since the 1950s, huge investments have been made in Sardinia as part of the full-scale development project for southern Italy, and Sardinian society and economy have undergone major changes.
