1908‐67 Brazilian novelist. After working as a doctor in his hometown of Minas Gerais, he entered the diplomatic field and made his literary debut with his collection of short stories, "Sagas" (1946), during the heyday of northeastern regionalist writers. He quickly gained attention and was recognized as a master with his collection of novellas, "Corpo de Baile" (1956), and his full-length novel, "The Great Interior" (1956). His works are characterized by their rich narrative quality set in Minas Gerais, yet they also contain a universality specific to human existence that goes beyond that, and by his unique style, which makes full use of the potential of the Portuguese language in terms of vocabulary and syntax.
