Brazilian novelist. After working as a doctor in his hometown of Minas Gerais, he entered the diplomatic field and made his literary debut with his collection of short stories, "Sagas" (1946), during the heyday of northeastern regionalist writers. He quickly gained attention and was recognized as a master with his collection of novellas, "Corpo de Baile" (1956), and his full-length novel, "The Great Interior" (1956). His works are characterized by their rich narrative quality set in Minas Gerais, yet they also contain a universality specific to human existence that goes beyond that, and by his unique style, which makes full use of the potential of the Portuguese language in terms of vocabulary and syntax.

ブラジルの小説家。故郷ミナス地方で医師を務めた後に外交官畑に入り，北東部地方主義作家の全盛期に短編小説集《サガもどき》(1946)で文壇にデビューし，一躍注目を浴び，中編小説集《コルポ･デ･バイレ》(1956)，長編小説《大いなる奥地》(1956)で巨匠の名をほしいままにした。彼の作品の特徴は，ミナス地方を舞台とし物語性に富んだ地方色濃い作品でありながら，それを超えて人間存在に固有の普遍性を備えていることと，語彙，統語法の上でポルトガル語の潜在力を縦横に駆使して創造した彼独自の文体にある。
