This is an anniversary of death that originated from the taboo ideas of Onmyodo. It first appeared in a calendar note at the end of the Muromachi period, and there were no strong taboos during the Edo period, but it spread among city dwellers from the Meiji period onwards. January, April, July and October are days of the boar, February, May, August and November are days of the tiger, and March, June, September and December are days of the horse. The twelve Chinese zodiac signs, boar, tiger and horse, are applied to each month in that order starting from January. It is said that on this day the activity of the twelve Chinese zodiac signs changes, and if construction, especially starting construction, erecting pillars and raising the ridgepole, breaks out later on and the disaster is said to extend to the three houses next door, hence the name Sanrinbou.
