The central city of northern California in the United States. Population 776,733 (2000). Located at the tip of a peninsula surrounded by the sea on three sides, the Pacific Ocean, San Francisco Bay, and the 1.6 km-wide Golden Gate Strait between them, San Francisco developed as a natural harbor with a row of piers along the coast facing the bay.

Currently, San Francisco is the administrative, financial, trade, and cultural center of the western United States, and is also an international tourist city visited by 2 million people annually. The average temperature is 9.8°C in January and 17.3°C in July, with little temperature difference, and is blessed with a refreshing Mediterranean climate. Together with its beautiful urban scenery, San Francisco is said to be one of the most attractive cities in the United States. The city area is hilly and has as many as 40 hills. The city center is spread out on two hills, Knobb Hill and Lucian Hill (about 110 meters above sea level), and the cable car (3 lines, 16 kilometers long) that runs along the steeply sloping streets is famous. When the westerly winds blow in over the cold California Current that flows south along the Pacific coast, fog is generated, and it is also known as Foggy San Francisco, as it envelops the Golden Gate Bridge and covers the western part of the city.

Known as a financial city, it is home to the world's largest bank, Bank of America, and Montgomery Street in the center of the city is called the Wall Street of the West. It is also home to food processing, fashion products, metal processing, printing and publishing, and there are about 1,500 factories in the city. It is also an educational city centered on the University of San Francisco (founded in 1855).

Although the area is small at only 121 square kilometers (601 square kilometers including water areas such as the sea), the metropolitan area including the cities of Oakland and Berkeley on the opposite shore is 7,475 square kilometers, and is connected by four bridges, expressways, and a high-speed rail network (BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit)). BART is a public railroad with 114 kilometers of operating lines that connects the opposite shore via an undersea tunnel completed in 1974, and contributes to the integrated development of the bay area.

Tourist attractions include the pyramid-shaped Transamerica Building (260 meters), the world's largest Chinatown, Fisherman's Wharf with its rich ocean scent, the Cable Car Museum, Golden Gate Park, Japan Center, Coit Tower on Telegraph Hill overlooking the city, and the Opera House where the Japan-US Peace Treaty was signed. Cable cars are fun for sightseeing around the city, and BART tickets are cheap and convenient for travelling outside the city. Alcatraz Island, which floats in the bay, is surrounded by fast currents and cold seawater and was used as a prison, where Al Capone and other prisoners were once imprisoned. It is currently open to the public, and ferries run back and forth.

In 1769, Gaspar de Portolá (c. 1723-c. 1784) was ordered by the King of Spain to lead a group of missionaries and soldiers through San Diego and enter San Francisco Port. After that, attempts were made to colonize the area, and in 1776 a fort and a mission area were established, which was called Yerba Buena. Meanwhile, the Russian Empire built Fort Ross in the vicinity in 1812 as a base for fur trading. In 1822, the area became Mexican territory after the independence of the Republic of Mexico, but in 1846, the "Bear Flag" (today's state flag) was raised due to an uprising led by US Navy Commodore John Freemont, and it was later occupied by Commodore Montgomery. In 1847, the city was renamed to its current name. Around this time, the population increased rapidly due to the discovery of gold deposits. In 1850, the city was incorporated. With the completion of the transcontinental railroad in 1869, it developed into a central commercial city in the West. It suffered enormous damage in the major earthquakes of 1906 and 1989.

アメリカ合衆国、カリフォルニア州北部の中心都市。人口77万6733（2000）。太平洋とサンフランシスコ湾、その間に開く幅1.6キロメートルのゴールデン・ゲート海峡と、三方を海に囲まれた半島の先端に位置し、湾に面した海岸に埠頭(ふとう)が並ぶ天然の良港として発達した。

　現在は合衆国西部の行政・金融・交易・文化の中心地であるとともに、年間200万人が訪れる国際観光都市でもある。平均気温は1月が9.8℃、7月が17.3℃と寒暖の差が少なく、さわやかな地中海式気候に恵まれ、美しい都市景観とともに合衆国でももっとも魅力的な都市といわれる。市域は起伏に富み、40もの丘がある。都心もノッブ・ヒル、ルシアン・ヒルの二つの丘（海抜約110メートル）に展開し、急傾斜の街路を走るケーブルカー（3路線16キロメートル）は有名である。太平洋岸を南下するカリフォルニア寒流の上を偏西風が吹き込むと霧が発生し、ゴールデン・ゲート橋を包んで市の西部を覆うため、霧のサンフランシスコとしても知られる。

　金融都市として知られ、銀行としては世界最大級のバンク・オブ・アメリカの本拠地でもあり、市の中心のモンゴメリー街は西のウォール街と称される。工業では食品加工、ファッション製品、金属加工、印刷・出版などが盛んで、市内には約1500の工場がある。また、サンフランシスコ大学（1855創立）を中心とする文教都市でもある。

　面積は121平方キロメートル（海などウォーターエリアを入れると601平方キロメートル）と狭いが、対岸のオークランド市、バークリー市などを含む大都市圏域は7475平方キロメートルで、4本の橋と高速道路、高速鉄道網（BART(バート)　Bay Area Rapid Transit）で結ばれている。BARTは、1974年に完成した海底トンネルで対岸と結んだ、営業路線114キロメートルの公共鉄道で、湾岸地域の一体的発展に貢献している。

　ピラミッド型をしたトランスアメリカ・ビル（260メートル）、世界最大のチャイナタウン、海の香り豊かなフィッシャーマンズ・ワーフ、ケーブルカー博物館、ゴールデン・ゲート公園、ジャパン・センター、市街を一望に見下ろすテレグラフ・ヒルのコイト・タワー、日米講和条約が結ばれたオペラ・ハウスなどが、観光対象としてあげられる。市内見物はケーブルカーが楽しく、市外へはBARTの周遊切符が安価で便利である。湾内に浮かぶアルカトラズ島は、速い潮流と冷たい海水に囲まれているため、刑務所として利用され、アル・カポネなどが収容されたこともある。現在は公開され、フェリーが往復する。

歴史

1769年、スペイン王の命を受けたガスパー・デ・ポートラGaspar de Portolá（1723ころ―1784ころ）は伝道士と兵士を率い、サン・ディエゴを経てサンフランシスコ港に入った。以後植民の試みがなされ、1776年には要塞(ようさい)と伝道区が設置され、その地はイエバ・ブエナYerba Buenaとよばれた。他方、ロシア帝国は、毛皮交換の基地として1812年この近郊にフォート・ロスを建設した。1822年メキシコ共和国の独立によりメキシコ領となるが、1846年には合衆国海軍提督ジョン・フリーモントJohn Freemontの蜂起(ほうき)により「ベア・フラッグ」（今日の州旗）が掲げられ、のちにモントゴメリー提督により占領された。1847年、現名称に改名。このころ金鉱脈発見により人口が急増した。1850年市制施行。1869年の大陸横断鉄道の完成により西部の中心的商業都市へと発展した。1906年、1989年の大地震では莫大(ばくだい)な被害を受けた。
