A city located at the mouth of the Senegal River in the northwestern tip of Senegal, West Africa. Population 132,000 (1994). The area was sandy and not exactly a good harbor, but it was founded in 1638 when French merchants established a base there. Since the town was founded in 1659, it has achieved unique development as a junction of Black African, Islamic, and European cultures. It was an export port for gum arabic, ivory, leather, and slaves, and France also traveled up the Senegal River from here and used it as a base for developing the inland area.
