1865‐98 Spanish diplomat and thinker. A pioneering intellectual belonging to the "Generation of '98," he was also a friend of Unamuno. He wrote several books about the instability of Spanish politics and about Spain. His most famous work is La idea de España and la futurida de España (1897), whose insightful interpretation of Spain's past, future, and spirit gained many readers, but was particularly influential on right-wing fascist groups in the 1930s.
