Echizen Manzai

A manzai handed down in Nootsubo, Echizen City, Fukui Prefecture. It is also called Nootsubo Manzai. During the Edo period, it is said that every year on New Year's Day, they would go to the castles of domains such as Fukui and Sabae in Echizen, Kanazawa and Daishoji in Kaga (Ishikawa Prefecture). There are many legends related to Emperor Keitai in Echizen, and Manzai is no exception, but its origins are unknown. However, Nootsubo is said to be a name related to Utsubo-mai, so it probably has an ancient history. There are "Kotobuki Manzai" and "Ogizukushi" with one Tayu and one Saizō, "Sanbasō", "Kiyari Manzai", and "Saitori Manzai" with multiple Saizō, and "Maikomi Oie Manzai" with multiple Saizō. The Tayu wears a Samurai Eboshi hat, a plain Maizuru robe, and a fan in his hand, while Saizō wears a Daikoku hood, a formal kimono, hakama, and a Banzai drum in his hand, but depending on the song he also wears a Kamasu hat or a Chocho Naginata hat. The dance, gestures, and narration are all fast-paced and lively.

福井県越前(えちぜん)市野大坪(のおおつぼ)に伝承する万歳。野大坪万歳ともよばれる。江戸時代は毎年元旦(がんたん)に越前の福井、鯖江(さばえ)、加賀（石川県）の金沢、大聖寺(だいしょうじ)などの藩城に登城していたという。越前には継体(けいたい)天皇にまつわる伝承が多く、万歳も例外でないが、不詳である。ただ野大坪は靭舞(うつぼまい)に関する名称とされ、古い来歴をもつものだろう。太夫(たゆう)と才蔵各1人ずつの「ことぶき万歳」「扇づくし」、才蔵が複数の「三番叟(さんばそう)」「木やり万歳」「さいとり万歳」、両方とも複数の「舞込お家万歳」などがある。太夫は侍烏帽子(さむらいえぼし)、舞鶴(まいづる)の素袍(すおう)、手に扇、才蔵は大黒頭巾(ずきん)、着付(きつけ)、袴(はかま)、手に万歳太鼓が基本だが、曲によって叺(かます)帽子、蝶々薙刀(ちょうちょうなぎなた)帽子をかぶる。舞、しぐさ、語りとも早いテンポで軽快である。
