In Korea during the Joseon Dynasty, people who did not enter the government because of differences in political and ideological stance with those in power, but instead took pride in being noble people (people outside the government), often living in the mountains and devoting themselves to learning. They were also called Sanrinshoshi or Hermits. In a broad sense, they refer to the Sirin school. At the end of the Goryeo Dynasty and the beginning of the Joseon Dynasty, Confucian scholars Jeong Mongju, Gil Jae, and Kim Suk Jae maintained their loyalty to the Goryeo Dynasty, saying that they would not serve two loyal subjects, and did not enter the government of the new dynasty (the Joseon Dynasty). As a result, Jeong Mongju was killed by Yi Seong-gye, and Gil Jae and Kim Suk Jae fled to the mountains, devoted themselves to training their disciples, and developed Confucianism.
