A port town and seaside resort on the north coast of the Brittany Peninsula in western France. Population 49,000 (1990). In 1967, the connected islands of Saint-Malo, Saint-Servan, and Paramé merged. Since Roman times, Areto in the Saint-Servan district flourished as the administrative center, but people gradually moved to the island of Saint-Malo, which was easier to defend against Norman invasions, and the bishopric was also moved there in 1144. The island is surrounded by a 12th century wall, and the town, destroyed in World War II, has been rebuilt exactly as it was in the past, conveying vestiges of the Middle Ages.
