Combining various pieces of information to draw new conclusions is a major intellectual activity of humans. In research into information science and artificial intelligence, this type of intellectual activity is called inference, and performing inference on a computer is called machine inference or automated reasoning. There are many types of inference that humans perform. For example, consider a situation in which you are deciding what to make for dinner. First, you infer what you can make using the ingredients you have at home.

いろいろな情報を組み合わせて新たな結論を導くことは人間の主要な知的活動である。情報科学や人工知能の研究においては，そのような知的活動を推論と呼び，コンピューター上で推論を実行させることを機械推論もしくは自動推論automated reasoningと呼んでいる。　人間が行っている推論にはいろいろある。たとえば，晩ごはんの献立を決める場面を考えてみよう。まず，家にある材料を使って何ができるか推論する。
