1778‐1850 Argentine military officer. A hero of Latin American independence, along with Venezuela's Simon Bolivar, he contributed to the liberation of Argentina, Chile, and Peru. Born in Yapeju in northeastern Argentina, where his father was a Spanish officer and served as a civil servant, he moved to Spain with his family in 1785. He joined the army as an officer candidate in 1789, and after serving in campaigns in Africa and Europe, he distinguished himself in the battle against the French at Bailén in 1808, and was promoted to division commander in 1811.
