José de San Martín
1778‐1850
Argentine military officer. A hero of Latin American independence, along with Venezuela's Simon Bolivar, he contributed to the liberation of Argentina, Chile, and Peru. Born in Yapeju in northeastern Argentina, where his father was a Spanish officer and served as a civil servant, he moved to Spain with his family in 1785. He joined the army as an officer candidate in 1789, and after serving in campaigns in Africa and Europe, he distinguished himself in the battle against the French at Bailén in 1808, and was promoted to division commander in 1811.

アルゼンチンの軍人。ベネズエラのシモン・ボリーバルと並ぶラテン・アメリカ独立の英雄で,アルゼンチン,チリ,ペルーの解放に貢献した。スペイン人の士官を父に,父が役人をしていたアルゼンチン北東部のヤペジュに生まれ,1785年家族とともにスペインに移った。89年士官候補生として軍隊に入り,アフリカやヨーロッパの戦役に参加したのち,1808年バイレンにおけるフランス軍との戦闘で輝かしい軍功をたて,11年師団長に昇進した。
