...Iron ions (II) are removed by coagulation (contact) filtration as insoluble iron (III) through air oxidation, or by oxidizing and adsorbing it with iron bacteria and then filtering it off. If it exists as organic colloidal iron, a coagulation operation using a coagulant is required. Manganese ions are removed by oxidizing and making them insoluble using an oxidizing agent such as chlorine or potassium permanganate in the presence of a manganese oxide catalyst.
