A perennial plant of the Papaveraceae family, it is prized as an alpine plant. It grows on the gravelly alpine plains of central and northern Honshu. Its overall color is powdery green, and all of its leaves are rooted and finely lobed. In summer, it produces a flower stalk about 10 cm tall, and bears several crimson-purple flowers. The name "Komakusa" comes from the fact that the shape of the long, slender corolla resembles a horse's face.
