In 1786 (Tenmei 6), Ijichi Dan'emon, a vassal of Kitago Hisatsura, the lord of Hirasa-go, invited a potter from Arita to establish the Hirasa Kiln, where he fired the first porcelain. Hirasa Sansai, which was made by applying a tortoiseshell-like sansai glaze to a porcelain base, became popular overseas.
