Whale scale - Whale fin

Japanese:
Whale scale - Whale fin

A sewing ruler used since the Edo period. One shaku is 1 shaku 2 sun 5 bu (about 37.9 centimeters) in the shaku-kan system. It is unclear when it first appeared, but it is thought that the 1 shaku 2 sun sewing gofuku shaku appeared at the end of the Muromachi period, and this was extended by another 5 bu. The name comes from the fact that it was made from whale baleen. Therefore, gofuku shaku was also called kujira shaku at one time. During the Edo period, both were used by private citizens, but not for official use. Furthermore, kujira shaku did not spread in the Tohoku region. In 1875 (Meiji 8), the government abolished gofuku shaku, leaving kujira shaku. Since 1959 (Showa 34), the manufacture of kujira shaku has been prohibited due to the unification of the system to the metric system. However, due to a campaign by TV writer Eirokusuke and others, it was revived in 1977 on the condition that it be written in the metric system without using the original unit scale of the kujira shaku.
